The cork oak (Quercus Suber L) grows across vast areas of the Mediterranean. This remarkable tree owes its long lifespan—sometimes up to 200 years—to its unique ability to regenerate. The harvested bark provides a versatile plant-based fiber for endless applications, while the tree immediately begins its next 9-year growth cycle toward a new harvest!
By using cork, the cork forests (Montados) in Portugal remain well managed by people who have built up immense know-how over centuries. Cork oaks from which bark is harvested absorb up to 3 to 5 times more CO₂ than cork oaks that are not harvested! These cork forests form a truly unique ecosystem in the world.
